Natural Helpers – Natural Helpers is a peer-to-peer helping program, meaning students learn how to help their friends and other students who need someone to talk to.

Natural Helpers are students who are identified by their peers as someone they can trust, someone who cares, and
someone who likes to help others. We then provide training on questioning techniques, county resources, and self-care. Training is also provided on current teen issues such as suicide, alcohol and drugs, stress, and dating violence. Surveys are given to determine each school’s needs.

These students are not asked to solve or shoulder their peers’ problems, but to help them find a resource who can help.

Program funding provided by Lincoln County DWI Prevention Program and Peer to Peer Helper Program Grant through the New Mexico Department of Health. Linda Hand, certified
prevention specialist, is the coordinator for the program, Cathy Barela and Amber Vallejos are the Carrizozo sponsors.
